Rhinoplasty, known colloquially as a nose job, is a procedure that has been used for years to help people improve the aesthetic and functionality of their noses. This procedure is offered at Cosmetic Surgery of DFW in Fort Worth, TX by the premier cosmetic surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery of DFW for Mommy Makeovers in Fort Worth, TX, Dr. Dustin C. Derrick, MD. Here’s what you need to know about recovering from this procedure.
How Long Does It Take To Recover From Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty recovery is pretty much over after only six to eight weeks. However, it can take up to 13 months to achieve a full recovery. Fortunately, you won’t have to take several months off from work to dedicate to your recovery. Rather, you can generally expect to return to work a mere week or two after your surgery.
How Can I Help My Recovery Progress?
Get Plenty of Deep Sleep
One of the best things you can do to move your recovery along is to get as much deep sleep as you possibly can. Deep sleep is important because the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, the final and deepest stage of the sleep cycle, is when most of your body’s self-healing occurs. Regardless of the scope of your procedure, incisions are made, and your skin needs to heal from the incisions.
To be clear, you will need to sleep on your back with your head elevated above your heart during the first several days of your recovery. You may not sleep on your side or stomach because it is important that you prevent the application of too much pressure to your nose early in the recovery process. If you usually toss and turn throughout the night, take steps to prevent accidentally rolling over in your sleep. You may need to sleep in a recliner for a while.
A Word of Warning
Besides protecting your nose from too much pressure while you’re sleeping, you need to protect your nose from too much pressure while you’re awake. If you wear glasses, speak with your eye doctor about wearing contact lenses temporarily. If this is not possible, see about getting a lighter frame for your lenses and only wearing your glasses when absolutely necessary. This is particularly important one week post-op when the splint is removed from the nose.
Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
You can also help your recovery progress as quickly as possible by eating nutritious foods. For your skin to heal itself efficiently, you need to make sure you are getting plenty of protein and vitamin C in your diet. Great sources of vitamin C include citrus and tropical fruits and dark green vegetables.
Another reason to eat lots of dark green vegetables during your recovery is that they are a good source of protein. Protein is vital to rapid recovery because protein is made up of amino acids. There are a number of amino acids that protein can be made up of, and collagen is made up of three amino acids. To ensure your skin can manufacture collagen and keep its existing collagen healthy, you need to eat protein from a variety of sources, like:
- Dark green vegetables
- Dairy products
It is also very important that you remain hydrated during your recovery process. Your urine should be pale consistently. If it is bright in color, you may be consuming more water-soluble vitamins, like B-12, than your body can process. This is nothing to worry about. However, if your urine is dark, you need to make a point to drink more water. If you’re not drinking enough water because you don’t think about it often enough, keep a water bottle next to you.
If you’re not drinking enough hydrating fluids because you don’t like the taste of water, consider infusing your favorite fruit into a large pitcher of water. Keep a large glass next to you at all times to help you remember to drink your delicious flavored water. You can also stay hydrated by drinking other hydrating fluids, like tea and coffee. Furthermore, you can eat foods with high water content, like:
- Broth-based soups
Am I a Good Candidate for This Procedure?
You may be considered a good rhinoplasty candidate if you are worried about the appearance or function of your nose. However, you need to attend an initial evaluation to verify your candidacy. We need to discuss your cosmetic goals and assess your concerns to verify this procedure will be effective for you. We also need to make sure it will be safe for you by reviewing your health.
What Other Procedures May Help Me Improve My Self-Confidence?
There are a number of other procedures we offer that may help you boost your self-esteem. If you have given birth and feel dissatisfied with your postnatal body, you may benefit from a mommy makeover or just one procedure designed to enhance the body. A mommy makeover is a suite of procedures designed to enhance the appearance of the postnatal body.
The procedures provided during a mommy makeover vary based on each mother’s concerns. Among the procedures offered are breast lifts, breast augmentation, and abdominoplasty.
Is Abdominoplasty Right for Me?
Abdominoplasty, sometimes referred to as a tummy tuck, often helps mothers improve their self-confidence and quality of life. Pregnancy takes a significant toll on the body, and the abdominal muscles can be torn during either pregnancy or childbirth. Pregnancy can also damage the pelvic floor muscles, resulting in stress urinary incontinence.
If you are suffering from the medical consequences of pregnancy, there is an excellent chance abdominoplasty will be ideal for you. Also, there is a good chance that you will be deemed a good fit for a tummy tuck even if you’re not suffering from stress urinary incontinence, or other physical injuries. A tummy tuck can improve your self-confidence significantly because it removes excess skin, tightens loose skin and muscles, and even removes a bit of fat.
Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?
Breast augmentation may be right for you if you are concerned about one breast being noticeably smaller than the other, but you don’t want to undergo fat grafting to augment just one breast. Another sign that breast augmentation may be right for you is a concern that both of your breasts are too small. To find out for sure whether breast augmentation is right for you, though, you’ll need to attend an initial mommy makeover evaluation with Dr. Derrick.
If you are a good breast augmentation candidate, he will advise you on the safest, most effective way for you to achieve your goals. No two breast augmentations are the same, and you will need to decide whether you want the implant placed above or below the chest muscle. You will also need to decide the shape, volume, and makeup of your implants. There are advantages to both saline and silicone implants. It comes down to your lifestyle and goals.
Is a Breast Lift Right for Me?
Regardless of whether you breastfed your child, there is a good chance that your breasts went through a lot of changes during pregnancy. Women often gain a significant amount of weight in their breasts when they are pregnant. Often, a lot of this weight is fat that is subsequently lost after pregnancy. If fat loss after pregnancy is rapid, skin sagging can occur.
If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, there is a good chance that you will qualify for a breast lift. However, an initial evaluation is required to verify that you are healthy enough to undergo this procedure. It is important that you have not breastfed within six months of your scheduled procedure. It is also important that you carefully consider whether you plan to breastfeed in the future. This may affect how your nipples are repositioned.
