The Purpose of Fat Grafting

What fat grafting does and why patients love its natural, lasting results.

Also referred to as fat transfer, fat grafting is the process of using your own fat to fill irregularities or grooves in certain areas. This treatment is considered safe and effective for many people looking to make aesthetic improvements without more invasive surgery. Dustin C. Derrick, MD is the lead plastic surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery of DFW for fat grafting and Mommy Makeovers in Fort Worth, TX, and he and his staff encourage you to learn more about the benefits of fat grafting.

Why Consider Fat Grafting?

Skin can become sunken as its natural elasticity diminishes. Previous injuries or surgeries can leave grooves or indentations, fat may gradually disappear from the cheekbones, and the natural aging process can deepen grooves in areas prone to lines and creases, such as the corners of the mouth or around the nose. Fat grafting can restore fullness in these areas. You may also benefit from a fat transfer if you have:

  • Lines between your cheeks and lower eyelids
  • Lips lacking desired fullness
  • Irregularities resulting from previous liposuction or similar procedures

How Is This Procedure Performed?

A modified version of liposuction known as liposculpture is typically used to obtain the fat. One or more small openings are made to harvest fat — usually from the abdomen or inner thigh, though other areas may be suitable. The collected fat is rinsed, processed, and prepared for injection, then distributed evenly into the target area. Injecting small amounts through several injections allows the transferred fat to be surrounded by healthy tissue, giving it better access to essential nutrients and oxygen.

What Benefits Might You Enjoy?

Fat transfer is appealing for many reasons. Results last much longer than dermal fillers — and can even be permanent once the transferred fat blends in with adjacent healthy tissue. Many patients also love that extra fat can be taken from an area where it isn’t wanted (like the abdomen, thighs, or hips) and moved to where it’s appreciated. And because your own tissue is used, there’s no risk of the allergic reactions that some materials in dermal fillers can cause.
