Mastopexy: What Is a Breast Lift?

What a breast lift is, who it’s for, and what the procedure involves.

There are many reasons women experience droopy breasts — factors that can cause the breasts to sag include childbearing, breastfeeding, and aging. Many women with sagging breasts choose to enhance their contour with a breast lift. Dustin C. Derrick, MD is the lead plastic surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery of DFW for Mommy Makeovers in Fort Worth, TX, and he and his team are proud to provide breast lift surgery as an option for our patients.

The best candidates for a breast lift are physically healthy and at a stable weight. Candidates should also be nonsmokers and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. Most women who have the procedure find that their nipples fall below the crease of the breasts when unsupported, and are bothered by sagging and lost volume.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Before the procedure, you will undergo a medical evaluation and lab testing to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. If you smoke, it is advised that you cease beforehand, and you should refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medications. The technique used for your breast lift is based on a number of factors, including:

  • The extent of the sagging
  • The position and size of the areola
  • The size and shape of the breasts

During the procedure, the underlying tissue is reshaped and lifted to improve the contour and firmness of the breasts. The nipple may also be repositioned for a more youthful look, and excess skin is removed. The openings are then sealed and the surgery is complete.

The results of this procedure are immediate. Although long-lasting, aging and pregnancy may cause the breasts to sag again over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight can help you preserve optimal results.
