Implant types, candidacy, and what to expect on the path to fuller breasts.
If you don’t have the body you desire because of small or uneven breasts, you may be a good candidate for a breast augmentation. Not only can the procedure give you fuller breasts, but many women also enjoy improved self-confidence afterward. You may be a good candidate if you are in overall good health with realistic expectations. Other factors that may make you an ideal candidate include:
If you have a breast augmentation, you will need to choose the size and type of implant that best suits your needs. Saline and silicone are the two most common implants, but some women choose a “gummy bear” implant or a fat transfer.
Saline implants are made with sterile salt water and offer a uniform shape and feel. Silicone implants are made with silicone gel and feel more like natural breast tissue. Gummy bear implants are form-stable and thicker than traditional silicone implants, with more projection at the bottom. Women who want a fat transfer must first undergo liposuction to harvest donor fat, which is purified and injected into the breasts — an option best suited to those wanting a small increase in size.
Before your surgery, you may be asked to have a medical evaluation and lab testing. If you smoke, you should stop a few weeks prior, and it is important to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications and herbal supplements beforehand. During the procedure, your surgeon creates discreet openings near the pectoral muscle; once the implant is inserted and positioned, the openings are sealed.
